Clune welcomes this mornings announcement that agreement has been reached with the Egyptian authorities to enable the importation of Irish cattle.

Ireland South MEP Deirdre Clune has praised the efforts of Minister Simon Coveney and officials from his department after this mornings announcement that agreement has been reached with the Egyptian authorities to enable the importation of Irish cattle.

The agreement follows an inspection visit by the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture to Ireland last week which concluded in an agreement with the Department of Agriculture here on a certificate to allow export of Irish cattle.

Commenting on the development Clune described it as a positive step for Irish farmers,

“This opens new markets for Irish cattle and provides a shot in the arm for the live cattle trade.  The Egyptian market has previously proved lucrative for Irish cattle exports. The Irish beef sector has faced challenging times but I am confident in the future, in particular when the Minister and his department are making such strident efforts to open new markets for our beef.
