Cork County Council will have to carry out immediate investigations into the flooding that hit Carrigaline, Ballygarvan, Rochestown and Glenbrook if it ti be avoided in the future.

A application has been made to Cork County Council for planning permission to build a new national school in Ballygarvan.

An Bord Pleanála decision to refuse permission to build 140 houses in Ballygarvan was based on the environmental concerns and the lack of local infrastructure.

Issues concerning ownership of the site of the new Ballygarvan NS have now been agreed by Cork County Council and the Dioceses of Cork & Ross. It is now for the Minister for Education Batt O’Keeffe to progress the building of the school and I will be raising this issue with him in the Dáil.

The Minister for Education will spend almost €4 million renting 282 prefabs in 116 Cork schools. The question must be asked is the Government spending taxpayers’ money wisely? Surely an accelerated programme of school building would not only create employment but also put an end to this false economy.

Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe needs to take a more active role in providing a new school in Ballygarvan before a new generation of local children start at the school in September.
