GREEN ROUTE PLAN WILL REVAMP ROADS OF DOUGLAS

Deirdre Clune TD and Cllr Tim Lombard have welcomed the new Green Route Plan which will have a major impact on the Douglas area.

Speaking after Cork County Council agreed to proceed with plans to implement the Green Route in the Douglas area. Cllr Lombard believes that the changes outlined in the plan are good news for people living in the Douglas area. Deputy Clune expressed her strong belief that for the new plan to meet its full potential then Bus Eireann needs to increase the number and frequency of bus services in the area.”

“There has long been a need for a taxi rank in Douglas Village and the new Green Route Plan has identified a suitable location on the Douglas Street end of the Old Carrigaline Road. This will provide a safe location for pedestrians to use the rank and an identified rank for local taxi drivers to use” stated Cllr Lombard.

“The provision of footpaths on Maryborough Hill and Donnybrook Hill will improve safety for local residents. The 2 metre wide footpath will allow families with buggies pass on the new footpath without having to step out into traffic. There are a significant number of raised pedestrian crossings planned throughout Douglas Village, Maryborough Hill and Donnybrook Hill as part of the project. The turning bay at Scart Cross is at long last going to be resolved so that the busses can turn safely at the junction” said Cllr Lombard

“The Green Route will attempt to encourage public transport and make things safer for local pedestrians and cyclists. In order for the Green Route Plan to be a success Bus Eireann will have to increase the frequency of busses on the routes. It is only with a regular and dependable local bus service that the Green Route Plan will reach its full potential. Ireland is facing a challenge to meet its climate change commitments and it is only by introducing plans that encourage the use of pubic transport and provide improved facilities for pedestrians and cyclists that we will meet these commitments” stated Deputy Clune.
