The Director General of the Irish Prison Service has told the Public Accounts Committee that work on the new Corl prison will not begin until the Thornton Hall Prison is under construction.

Spike Island prison closed in 2004 and for the last five years the island has been left idle. The future of this historic island is now to be decided by an interdepartmental committee but no decision has yet been made.

The PAC Report into FÁS shows that Dáil Committees can be used to investigate issues of public concern in a cost effective and time efficient way. The Government should now take steps to provide Committees with stronger investigative powers.
