(Prior to the conferring of the Freedom of the City of Cork on her father Peter Barry by Cork City Council)

TODAY is a wonderful day for my father, Peter. He’s delighted with the honour that City Council are bestowing on him. As a family we are very proud. We think it is an important day and we’re delighted that the city is recognising his contribution both as a politician and as a businessman.

He’s been in politics most of his adult life. He was a Fine Gael TD from 1969-1997 and Lord Mayor of Cork City in 1970, a decade after his father and my grandfather, Anthony Barry. I was honoured to follow the tradition of Lord Mayor in 2005. Since I was a young child he was always very involved and giving of his time. It’s something he has always been delighted to be involved and felt he he made a contribution.

Today is a day that his own city, a city he is so proud of, is honouring him and that makes for a wonderful day.

Peter was an outstanding Minister for Foreign Affairs. He played a major role in the negotiation of the Anglo Irish Agreement. I have no doubt he helped save the SDLP from extinction. He was a rock of common sense. He should have been leader of FG. I never heard him use personal comments. A great Irish man.
