Ireland’s broadband services must improve to encourage new business
Filed under: Development, Economy, General News, Innovation and Research
Ireland needs to change it’s attitude towards broadband in order for the country to progress and create jobs.
Broadband is a necessary part of both domestic and business life in Ireland today and we need to change our line of thought in relation to this. Rural and urban parts of our country continue to have difficulty in getting connected in spite of unrelenting promises to service the entire island of Ireland.
We need a more efficient, reliable and economical broadband service throughout the entire country that will attract new businesses as well as opening up many towns and villages to new employment opportunities.
A report by The National Competitiveness Council published on July 22 recently named broadband services in Ireland as one of the most expensive in the world and said: “The challenge for Ireland is to deliver higher quality/speed services at existing prices.”
Everything about businesses depends on the internet: the websites, e-mail, payments, banking, accounts, for some even the business phone line is delivered online. The same remains for households. Our future success relies our government delivering on promises to connect everyone in this country regardless of geographical location.

Deirdre,
This is a debate that has been going on for over 10 years. One of the most important issues is that the political will to make a concerted effort and related investment to improve the availability & quality of broadband services in this country just isn’t there. I won’t go into too much detail here as I have discussed this over and over again but recent decision have clearly show that this is the case.
August 30th, 2010 at 12:12 pmAnother issue is the lack of understanding of what “broadband” actually is. a 1Mbps service is not broadband and in international comparison does not hold up. This is due to a lack of understanding of the technology. The concept of the NBS build around the phalacy that 3G can deliver quality broadband clearly indicates this.
Lastly there is the fact that the availability of an acceptable broadband service in rural parts of Ireland will have a significant (positive)socio-economic impact.
Personally I am close to giving up hope on ever seeing this happen…
