FORMER Lord Mayor of Cork, Deputy Deirdre Clune has today pledged her support to an independent investigation into the last year’s floods which caused damaged of up to €141m and left hundreds of homes and families devastated.

Deputy Clune said that the local people have been fighting for this since last November and promises to put pressure on the Minister to say he will follow through with the recommendation.

“Today we have households here in Cork without adequate insurance cover, businesses
unable to reinsure themselves against flooding and, worst of all, a real fear that the events of last November could be repeated. Such an investigation is imperative to ensure measures will be put to in place to avoid future flooding to this extent.

“Whilst the committee can only recommend such an investigation, the minister is the only person who can put it in place. I am today calling on the Minister to not let the work of the committee become redundant but instead to clearly state his intentions to give it the green light.”
