Beamish & Crawford closure a body blow to Cork – Clune
Heineken’s decision to close the Beamish & Crawford brewery in Cork with the loss of 120 jobs is a body blow to the city and the region, Fine Gael Cork South Central TD Deirdre Clune said today (Thursday).
“This is a dreadful day for the 120 Beamish & Crawford staff and their families, particularly in the run-up to Christmas. I am extremely disappointed that more workers could not have been accommodated in the new Heineken set-up.
“Heineken must ensure that the staff can avail of the best possible redundancy package, and I am calling on all relevant State agencies to help them with retraining and finding alternative work.
“The decision to close the site marks the end of a very long tradition of brewing by Beamish & Crawford at this site in Cork. The distinctive building is a landmark site and is an integral part of the city’s identity. Heineken must now clearly spell out its plans for the site.
“The closure will also potentially have an impact in terms of business activity in Cork and in terms of the city’s tourism product.”
