The Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, Trade & Employment questioned interest groups toady on the Irish economy. The key fact that came out of the meeting is that Banks need to focus on supporting small & medium business if the economy is to be re-established on a solid foundation.

The CSO’s Live Register figures for January reveal a 14% increase in unemployment in Cork. If this ongoing growth in unemployment is to be tackled then we require the Government to urgently provide vision and leadership.

The number of under 25s on the live register has jumped from 33,289 in December 2007 to 62,311 in December 2009. The Government needs to bring forward a plan to tackle youth unemployment now before we see large numbers of young Irish people move abroad to find employment.
